Preserve the pre-amax when packing untied LSQ weights.
When amax_pre differs from amax_post, LSQ uses the pre scale to select FP4 values and the post scale to reconstruct them. The export path derives the packing scale from amax_post and passes it to NVFP4QTensor.quantize. This can produce FP4 values that differ from those used during training. Keep the post scale in exported metadata, but use the pre scale when packing the weight.

Nudge: the export fix is correct and its CPU test fails without it, but the dual-LSQ export claim is unverified and one new test only restates the recipe YAML.
Needs action:
- Confirm the dual-LSQ claim in the PR description.
NVFP4QTensor.get_weights_scaling_factor_from_quantizernow exportsamax_post, but the forward quantizes codes withamax_preand dequantizes withamax_post. Exported codes for untied LSQ may therefore not match training. The new test checks only the scale value. Either test codes and dequant against_fake_quantize, or limit the claim to tied LSQ (the only mode this recipe uses). - Drop
test_visual_linear_recipe_reenables_visual_quantizersintests/unit/recipe/test_lsq_recipes.py; it restates the YAML, andtest_nvfp4_lsq_visual_recipe_selects_expected_quantizersalready checks the real quantizer selection. See inline comment. - Add the "QAT/QAD-only, not for calibration-only PTQ" caveat that the sibling
nvfp4_lsq-mse_init-fp8_kv.yamlcarries, or explain why thehf_ptq.pyusage in the description is valid. See inline comment.
No action needed:
- Checked on the PR head: the CPU export test fails with the old
_amaxread (LSQ deletes_amax) and passes with the fix. The GPU export test passes for both Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5 on an RTX 6000 Ada, and the recipe unit tests pass. - The recipe is a near-copy of
nvfp4_lsq-mse_init-fp8_kv.yamlplus visual overrides; the modular imports keep that small. - CHANGELOG entry is under 0.49.0 (it names Qwen3-VL only; the recipe also covers Qwen3.5).

The sibling nvfp4_lsq-mse_init-fp8_kv.yaml says the LSQ scales are learned during training, so the recipe is QAT/QAD-only and not suitable for calibration-only PTQ. This description drops that, and the PR usage runs it through hf_ptq.py (calibration-only PTQ). Someone following the usage would export an un-trained LSQ checkpoint without being told. Please add the same caveat (and say Qwen3.5 as well as Qwen3-VL):

The hf_ptq.py command runs calibration and initializes the LSQ scales, but it does not train them. Presenting it as a complete QAD workflow was misleading.
I’ve added the QAT/QAD-only caveat to the recipe description and updated both the description and changelog to mention Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL.
I’ll relabel the command in the PR description as a calibration/export smoke check and explicitly state that it does not produce a QAD-trained checkpoint. A complete workflow requires QAT/QAD training before exporting the trained model.

This test re-asserts values that are written literally in the YAML (num_bits, static/dynamic, enable false), so it fails only if someone edits the YAML, not when behavior breaks. The real selection, including that patch embed and visual BMM stay disabled, is already covered on tiny Qwen models in test_nvfp4_lsq_visual_recipe_selects_expected_quantizers. Please remove it; keeping the new filename in _LSQ_RECIPES is enough here.

I’ve removed test_visual_linear_recipe_reenables_visual_quantizers in the local revision and retained the recipe in _LSQ_RECIPES.
test_nvfp4_lsq_visual_recipe_selects_expected_quantizers continues to cover actual quantizer selection on tiny Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5 models, including the patch-embedding and visual-BMM exclusions.

@kevalmorabia97 You’re right. The previous test only verified the exported post scale; it did not establish packed-code or dequantization parity for untied LSQ. Since the exporter also uses that scale to encode the weights, it does not preserve the untied-LSQ forward when the pre and post scales differ. |
What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
This PR adds an NVFP4 LSQ QAD recipe that quantizes both the language model and supported visual Linear layers in Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.5-VL.
The recipe uses:
The default multimodal exclusions remain in effect, after which the recipe selectively re-enables visual attention and
linear_fcweight quantizers plus visual Linear input quantizers. Patch embedding and visual BMM quantizers remain disabled, so non-Linear visual state such as positional embeddings is not accidentally quantized. The PR also:
Usage
The exported checkpoint contains NVFP4 visual and language Linear weights, dynamic NVFP4 activation metadata, and an FP8 KV-cache configuration. The recipe intentionally rejects text-only calibration because the enabled visual input quantizers require image activations.
Testing
Validated on an NVIDIA H20 with Python 3.12, PyTorch 2.11.0+cu130, and Transformers 5.12.1:
Result: 30 passed.
The GPU tests run calibration and unified Hugging Face export for:
